Earlier Morning Departures and Arrivals

My eldest left this morning on an airport shuttle at 4:00 a.m. As the driver opened the sliding door we could see the passengers already inside. They all looked half-dead, hungover or heart-broken. So my daughter climbs in and says (in her best perky game show voice) “Whooooooo wants to sit next to meeeeeeeee?!”

We all waved goodbye through sleepy eyes then headed back to find that we had locked ourselves OUT of the house. Par for the course for my family. I realized some time ago that my life is a sitcom-soap-opera-synthesis. The important thing to remember is to HEAR the laugh track in the moment.

My eldest and I texted each other one-liners and call backs to keep each other laughing for the better part of an hour as she headed on her way meanwhile my youngest fell asleep at my feet. And just as I was about to close my own eyes to catch a bit of sleep before the formal sun rise, my boy friend taps me on the shoulder to announce that the dalmatian molly was giving birth in our bedroom fish tank. Well OF COURSE she was. 🙂 The universe loves cosmic humor.  My baby leaving home and a new baby entering the wet world. As I said, the key is to hear the laugh track and smile at the not so subtle humor that reminds us to not take our lives or ourselves so serious.

There are of course memories, tears and fears that go along with these milestone moments. And there are loving arms, satori seconds and new opportunities to embrace along this healing journey.
