{"id":1121,"date":"2009-08-21T16:19:05","date_gmt":"2009-08-21T23:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/?p=1121"},"modified":"2009-08-22T14:28:43","modified_gmt":"2009-08-22T21:28:43","slug":"indirect-evidence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/?p=1121","title":{"rendered":"The Strange Charm of Quarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1125\" title=\"quark\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/quark1-300x246.jpg\" alt=\"quark\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/quark1-300x246.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/quark1.jpg 945w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the first evidence for quarks may have been around since 1968, I certainly don\u2019t recall the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.slac.stanford.edu\/vvc\/theory\/model.html\" target=\"_blank\">Standard Model<\/a> of particle theory let alone <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charm_quark\" target=\"_blank\">charm quarks <\/a>when I was in school.\u00a0 Yet atomic theory was being contemplated by Indian sages such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swami-krishnananda.org\/bs_2\/bs_2-2-02.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kanada<\/a> founder of Vaisheshika philosophy (200 BC).\u00a0 These early pioneers developed complex theories on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atomic_theory\" target=\"_blank\">elemental properties of atoms<\/a> and the world of form as well as formlessness, well before they had the tools to test molecular theory.<\/p>\n<p>Amazing still is that more than two thousand years later and as much as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/scitech\/article\/2008-09\/defense-lhc\" target=\"_blank\">$6<\/a>-10 billion dollars a pop (only small pun intended) for a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Large_Hadron_Collider\" target=\"_blank\">Large Hadron Collider (LHC)<\/a> we still have to rely on <strong><em>indirect evidence<\/em><\/strong> to prove the existence of a quark.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, <em>as I can really only grasp the most elementary explanation of elemental physics,<\/em> there is no way to actually <em>see<\/em> a quark \u2026 we can only perceive the path of it\u2019s wake as it travels.\u00a0 Whether we are pummeling particles to estimate their mass through abstraction or analyzing miles of data generated from multi-mile-long proton et al. colliders, the evidence that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.particleadventure.org\/quarks.html\" target=\"_blank\">strange charm of these upside down top\/bottom pairs<\/a> is to see if the results match \u00a0the theory.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"God Particle Image from National Geographic\" src=\"http:\/\/s.ngm.com\/2008\/03\/god-particle\/img\/god-particle-160.jpg\" alt=\"God Particle Image from National Geographic\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">God Particle Image from National Geographic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That which we can not see, yet through experimentation or deep inquiry we can track its existence, is perhaps not only the source of particle theory but Source itSelf.\u00a0 A quick <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=God+and+Physics\" target=\"_blank\">Google of God and Physics<\/a> and you\u2019ll see the convergence of Science and Spirit is coming ever closer to nuclear fusion or at the very least the Higgs boson &#8212;
