{"id":1549,"date":"2010-05-03T21:05:39","date_gmt":"2010-05-04T04:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/?p=1549"},"modified":"2010-05-03T21:16:15","modified_gmt":"2010-05-04T04:16:15","slug":"a-mothers-tale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/?p=1549","title":{"rendered":"A Mother&#8217;s Tale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/mourning-dove-montage2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1560\" title=\"mourning dove montage\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/mourning-dove-montage2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was cold and gray in LA, or thereabouts on this mid-spring morning.\u00a0 The sun was just starting to rise and breakthrough the early low clouds.\u00a0 I slipped off my black cotton peds that were keeping my feet warm in the house, determined not to get them damp and dirty as I went out to fill the bird feeder in front of my window.\u00a0 I left the screen sliding door open a tad so that my little dog could accompany me around the side of the house.\u00a0 My old girl would have nothing of the damp grass and cool breeze and stayed instead on the chaise lounge where I would spend the rest of the morning hours.\u00a0 As Dalai and I approached the seed feeder I heard a rustle in the crepe myrtle.\u00a0 When I looked up a mourning dove flew out of the foliage and dropped down on to the ground with her wing outstretched and lame.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dalai, leave her alone!&#8221;\u00a0 I shouted to the little dog.\u00a0 But Dal seemed more frightened by the strange behavior and simply stood on the sidewalk with her head sloped to one side.<\/p>\n<p>The dove flailed around the wet grass hopping on one leg and pulling this cockeyed wing behind her.\u00a0 All the while she was moving farther and farther away from the bird feeder where I was standing.<\/p>\n<p>A warm smile came to my face when I recognized the slick charade.\u00a0 &#8220;Oh, I see.&#8221;\u00a0 I said out loud.\u00a0 &#8220;You have a baby bird here somewhere in the brush and you want me to leave.&#8221;\u00a0 I remembered seeing a mother Plover perform the same trick two summers ago when her baby bird had become stuck on the wrong side of the curb as they were crossing the street.\u00a0 &#8220;Dalai go in the house.&#8221;\u00a0 I shouted, and was surprised that she obeyed without hesitation.\u00a0 Then again it was COLD and she really didn&#8217;t need much encouragement to return to the warm blankets next to her hairless buddy.\u00a0 &#8220;Ok, mamma bird, I will leave you and your baby be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I mused to myself that I was just lied to by a bird.\u00a0 As the mother of three my world is about teaching my children not to lie.\u00a0 Keeping my own word impeccable and my karma intact is the corner stone of my family values.\u00a0 Somehow I rather believed that dishonesty was a trait unique unto humans.\u00a0 While the tendency to anthropomorphize is great when it comes to imbuing meaning on the puppy who chewed up your favorite Jimmy Choo, it\u2019s not often such a clever prevarication so well staged and executed as the lame duck as it were in my yard this morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/one-mallard-duck-chick1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1559 alignleft\" title=\"one mallard duck chick\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/one-mallard-duck-chick1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/one-mallard-duck-chick1.jpg 635w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/one-mallard-duck-chick1-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/a>And speaking of ducks, it was to be the path of the feather these last two days in my suburban purlieu.\u00a0 As with most mornings my body was being raked over the POTS coals and my mind was digging in the mud of detesting this life &#8230; I saw from the corner of my eye a little mallard with her crew of peeps all in a line walking through the tall grasses at the edge of my yard.\u00a0 For the next hour my world was reduced to the amazing story of the waterfowl&#8217;s walkabout.\u00a0 As you might expect there were adorable photo ops and the inevitable encounter with an exuberant dog who is fortunately even more frightened of a mother duck in full waving wingspan than she was of the not-so-lame dove yesterday morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/mother-duck-with-brood-all-in-a-line1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1557\" title=\"mother duck with brood all in a line\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/mother-duck-with-brood-all-in-a-line1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mother-duck-with-brood-all-in-a-line1.jpg 1051w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mother-duck-with-brood-all-in-a-line1-300x61.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mother-duck-with-brood-all-in-a-line1-1024x209.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/mourning-dove-baby-close-up.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1568\" title=\"mourning dove baby close up\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/mourning-dove-baby-close-up.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a>As for that mourning dove brood, I did get a chance to catch a glimpse of the little one when the sun was warmer.\u00a0 She looked like a Victorian child &#8212;
