{"id":289,"date":"2008-10-20T07:50:25","date_gmt":"2008-10-20T14:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/?p=289"},"modified":"2009-04-05T14:24:47","modified_gmt":"2009-04-05T21:24:47","slug":"whats-up-doc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/?p=289","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s Up Doc?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-290\" title=\"doctor-hmo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/doctor-hmo.gif\" alt=\"doctor-hmo\" width=\"432\" height=\"306\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My Holter Test results came back yesterday.\u00a0 Twenty-one faxed pages of technical acronyms that read more like spy code than medical analysis.\u00a0 In my own technology career it was easy to slip into techno-ease as our microcosm revolved around cryptic initials that at times we ourselves had long forgotten what they stood for.\u00a0 Back in the 90&#8217;s when we were installing ATM (asynchronous transfer mode: network switching technology) all over campus, the community was eager with bank cards poised to withdraw funds from their computer CD slots!\u00a0 It&#8217;s something about job security I suspect.\u00a0 If no one understands what it is that you do, than no one can do your job.\u00a0 However in my department we focused on demystifying technology.\u00a0 We broke things down into archetypes appropriate for our audience.\u00a0 Something the medical field could rally around as well.<\/p>\n<p>However nebulous the medical cryptogram, Google to the rescue!\u00a0 Whatever did people do before Ask Jeeves, Yahoo Answers, Dogpile or Wikipedia which is the number one term paper resource used by junior high students nationwide &#8211; but that&#8217;s a topic for another shaggy dog chronicle.<\/p>\n<p>A growing population of google-condriacs armed with stacks of heresy flood doctor&#8217;s waiting rooms each day expecting to match wits with the Hippocratic Oath itself.\u00a0\u00a0 If you are lucky, your doctor&#8217;s office has recently upgraded their in-house network.\u00a0 No more paper files and illegible diagnostic notes.\u00a0 Your physician carries a wireless tablet that contains not only your entire medical record from the point of conception in the back seat of that 58&#8242;
