{"id":3591,"date":"2014-08-15T23:42:18","date_gmt":"2014-08-16T06:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/?p=3591"},"modified":"2014-08-15T23:42:40","modified_gmt":"2014-08-16T06:42:40","slug":"enlightened-endopterygota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/?p=3591","title":{"rendered":"Enlightened Endopterygota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/flyshit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3592\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/flyshit.jpg\" alt=\"flyshit\" width=\"800\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/flyshit.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/flyshit-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was a time when I would read every morsel of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nisargadatta_Maharaj\" target=\"_blank\">Nisargadatta<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advaita.org\/wayneLiquorman.php\" target=\"_blank\">his disciples<\/a>, listen to each<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adyashanti.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Adyashanti<\/a> audio track and watch all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/Moojiji\" target=\"_blank\">Mooji<\/a> videos on youtube from dawn till dusk.\u00a0 Because I wanted what they had.\u00a0 I wanted to be <em>awake<\/em>.\u00a0 It was more than just a passing envy, I wanted so much to escape my monkey mind and end the suffering that I would meditate like I was training for a marathon.\u00a0 The desperation behind the practice was an irony that was lost to me in the moment.<\/p>\n<p>But seeing the sages in print or media made it seem like it was <em>possible<\/em> for me.\u00a0 It certainly <em>looked<\/em> easy.\u00a0 Breathe a bit, surrender now and Zen and then you too can attain eternal peace on earth.\u00a0 And if watching a few Vimeos didn&#8217;t bring you to the gateless gate there are a thousand gargoyles who will be more than ecstatic to accept your gold card in exchange for their guru-4-U services.\u00a0 And the more you spend the faster you will get to the finish line.\u00a0 Right?<\/p>\n<p>We want what we think <em>they<\/em> have.\u00a0 Because on the surface things look so good for them.\u00a0 They never raise their voice (well,\u00a0accept Nisargadatta, because he <strong>was <\/strong>a special kind of monster truck master) they never get afraid, lonely, sad or get put on hold by their cable company for 81 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Its the Zen version of the grass is always greener on the other side of the yin yang.\u00a0 And I understand that, I do.\u00a0 I was a desparate seeker for much of my\u00a0post-adolescence-apocalyptic life.\u00a0 And I can&#8217;t say that I&#8217;ve stopped circling the wagons in my perimenapausal jeers.\u00a0 But I am more likely to see myself running on the hamster wheel and realize that I am not going to land in Oz any time soon.<\/p>\n<p>For other&#8217;s attaining the state of the sage, is much like getting another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scouting.org\/meritbadges.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">scout badge<\/a>.\u00a0 It is something they can sew on their <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Religious_habit\" target=\"_blank\">habit<\/a> and show the world that they have arrived!\u00a0 I suspect its like showing your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">AARP<\/a> card at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dennys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Denny&#8217;s<\/a> for the grande slam early bird blue plate special.\u00a0 We want to be acknowledged for our achievement because somehow that makes it more real.\u00a0 And if its\u00a0<em>real<\/em> it can&#8217;t be taken away from us.\u00a0 Right?<\/p>\n<p>Of course its not just enlightenment that we are rushing to the edge of the ledge to catch the last train.\u00a0 We want a marriage license, a fixed-rate mortgage loan, and a cemetary plot by the sea &#8230; Look!
