Let&#8217;s Change a Tire Girls!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was watching one of the 10 days of thunder Sprint Cup races with the Redneck over the weekend and my college girl heard Daryl Waltrip signal the launch of the race &#8230; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hb44HpaYNjo\" target=\"_blank\">Boogity, Boogity, Boogity! Let&#8217;s Go Racing Boys!!<\/a>&#8221; and I tried to explain to her the legacy of those lines. \u00a0But not coming from the moonshine rat race culture myself I&#8217;m quite certain it was all lost in transmission. \u00a0Fact is, I don&#8217;t know much about cars, despite growing up with a father who worships the <a href=\"http:\/\/netwelding.com\/1934_Pro_Street.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Big Block<\/a>\u00a0but I do know how to change a flat tire. \u00a0Dad made sure of that. \u00a0And as soon as my first girl was able to drive I made certain she knew how to change a tire too. \u00a0Life has changed since then, I don&#8217;t get out much at all and I certainly don&#8217;t change many tires. \u00a0So it may have surprised (worried) my youngest daughter when I announced that I was going to teach her how to change a flat tire. \u00a0After a brief discussion of whether we should wake up the redneck and let him know our plan we headed out to the garage.<\/p>\n<p>Step One &#8230; Locate the spare tire. \u00a0I showed her how to lift the hatch and unscrew the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spare_tire\" target=\"_blank\">spare donut.<\/a>\u00a0 We took the pieces of the jack out of their clasps and laid everything out on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Step Two <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3851\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTLugNuts2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"FTLugNuts2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTLugNuts2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTLugNuts2-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>&#8230; Loosen lug nuts. \u00a0Before you jack up the tire, you need to make sure each of the lug nuts are finger loose. \u00a0Our lug wrench was fairly short and we didn&#8217;t have enough tork to untwist the nut by hand. \u00a0(Okay, I learned a few things from my Dad.) \u00a0So we opted to STEP on the wrench with out foot and jump on it a bit. \u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Redneck Safety Note: \u00a0<\/span>NEVER step on the wrench it could slip out from under you and impale your leg! \u00a0If you need the extra power you can grasp the wrench firmly with your hand right on the nut and then step on the BACK side of the wrench. \u00a0That way if it does slip from your foot you always have a clean grasp of the wrench with your hand and it won&#8217;t go out flying. \u00a0<\/em>We actually try and keep a piece of pipe in the car to extend the handle of the wrench.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3852\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"FTJack3\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack3-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3850\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack4-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"FTJack4\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack4-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack4-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Step Three &#8230; Raise the body of the car. \u00a0You need to find the FRAME of the car and not place the jack plate under the flimsy part of the door or other decorative body bits. \u00a0Our jack had a groove that was designed to fit inside the metal frame in front of the wheel.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Redneck Safety Note:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Make sure you CHAULK the tire before you try and jack up the car. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The conversation went something like this <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Did you remember to loosen the lug nuts babe?&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes of course I did, because I know how to change a tire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;K. \u00a0Did you chalk the tire?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Did you CHALK the tire?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why would I chalk the tire? \u00a0What does that do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you jack up that tire it could make the whole car SLIP. \u00a0And you don&#8217;t want that car rolling back on ya, so you gotta chalk the tire first.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTChaulkNO1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3856 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTChaulkNOSM.gif\" alt=\"FTChaulkNOSM\" width=\"300\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a>As I was getting up to get the chalk that I keep in my sewing kit, I turned around and asked &#8220;How does making a line on the tire with a piece of chalk stop the car from rolling back on me?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Long story short (too late, I know) to &#8220;chock&#8221; a tire has nothing to do with drawing a chalk line on the rubber. \u00a0It means you put a BRICK or some other BLOCK behind the opposite tire wheel than the one you are working on. \u00a0So in our case .. we were lifting the rear LEFT tire, so we put a\u00a0<em>chock<\/em> (two <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3847\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTChalked6-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"FTChalked6\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTChalked6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTChalked6-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>concrete pavers behind the FRONT RIGHT tire. \u00a0So that if the car did move as we raised her up, it would not roll back up on us.<\/p>\n<p>We placed the jack handle hook in the jack handle and rotated the jack slowly until the tire was off of the ground.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step Four &#8230; Remove the lug nuts and slip off the flat tire. \u00a0Occasionally we needed to remind our self <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=righty+tighty+lefty+loosy\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Righty tighty lefty loosy!<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0and we would turn the bolts to the left and set them aside on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Step Five &#8230; Put on the donut and tighten her up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTDonut9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3846\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTDonut9-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"FTDonut9\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTDonut9-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTDonut9-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Redneck Tip: Put on the bottom lugs first, that will hold the tire in place and it&#8217;ll be easier to put the rest on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3843 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coolkarma.com\/dharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack11-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"FTJack11\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack11-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.karmabytes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/FTJack11-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Step Six &#8230;
