Worth It For The Joke

I asked my husband this morning, if he would be able to defrost a drop biscuit and veggie sausage for me from the freezer. I know his back hurts, but my POTS was still in the morning pits — so I wasn’t sure he’d be okay with the ask. I say that, but truly he goes above and beyond for me .. everyday. Having limited mobility (coupled with being a high needs old crone not recognizing that I am not longer a cute high needs princess) means I impact his day immensely even if they are often “minor tasks”.

I offered to go get the snack myself but he quipped quickly in his overly southern drawl “If you were gonna go git it urself u would have done did it by now instead of askin’ me to fetch it.” Then he smiled with a raised eyebrow. If I was feeling spry I would have sprinted to the door to dash downstairs myself at his chiding. Because even though I am orthostatically challenged I can DASH and scramble for a short stint.

Now mind you, his back is HURTING today (more than usual, as he SLEPT on top of my blood pressure cuff.) But that didn’t stop him from coming back upstairs from the kitchen with a frozen biscuit in his hand … walking over to me saying .. “Is this the …” (dropping the frozen biscuit on the floor) “Oh I guess this IS the drop biscuit.” Only to have to go all the way back down to actually GET the sausage and biscuit for real. And in truth he did it MORE THAN ONCE .. because it was a good joke and he was laughing HARD his own slapstick.

Humor … it doesn’t fix our broken bits. But it certainly has a lot of feel good dancing cells in our blood stream even if it’s only for a moment. And that makes an immeasurable difference at the end of the day. As I often say … Life isn’t what you make of it … it’s what you make up about it. Did it cause his back to hurt more? I’m sure it did with all that bending. And for US the joke is always worth it.
