May God Hold You In The Palm of His Hand

A little hummer flew into a glass window on the second floor today where my daughter lives.  She called right away, and when I went upstairs I saw the poor peep was knocked out but still breathing.  Last week a hawk flew into the glass balcony and was not as fortunate.  But that’s a path of the feather for another time.  Perhaps though, the hawk’s fatal crash made it that much more pressing to me that this little bird live at least for today.

We spent perhaps two hours with the small creature.  It really is quite breath taking to hold something that is usually moving at the speed of light.  Wizzzz, Swooosh, Zipppp.  Humming birds are so fast it’s hard to he appreciate all of the detail on their tiny feathers.  The iridescent sheen in the sunlight caught all of the blues, teal and green down her back.  And that tongue!  It was longer than her beak and was simply amazing to watch as it found every crevasse in the redneck’s wise old palm.

Joy Happiness & Love are among the animal shaman wisdom for when a hummingbird crosses your path.  The ability to fly into small places to heal and endurance over long journeys.  It was truly a blessed moment in time for so many reasons.

But as with any awe-moment … it was only a slice of the pie.  Does the story have a happy ending?  Well, she flew off into the olive tree and seemed strong in her flight.  But truth is she stayed on that one branch on the top of the tree for a long while.  Perhaps another couple of hours.  Which is not the behavior of a hummer who was @100%.  But she eventually took off and left our nurturing shelter.  Later that afternoon, the redneck swears it was her that came and dive bombed his head as he walked out to the koi pond.  He believes she was telling him thank you and letting him know that she was alright and on her way.

Of course there’s no way of knowing.  We have dozens of humming birds in our yard of all shapes and varieties.  But Life is not so much about what you make out of it as much as what you make up about it.  So I’ll embrace the redneck’s story and allow my natural cynicism to subside and step aside and bask for a bit in having it all in the palm of my hand.
